Sugar Features High among Acne Cause

The research into acne has heated up in recent years. In their thoroughness, scientists are going back to revisit theories that have existed as basic received wisdom for years now and have informed our understanding into what causes acne. The acne causes that scientists have understood so far have decidedly not included sugar as a possibility; fat, perhaps, but not sugar. Actually, that basic understanding is not altogether flawed. They still don't think that sugar itself causes acne. It is just that sugar happens to belong to a group of foods that raise your blood glucose levels very quickly (they like to call this tendency, a high glycemic index), and make you put out a lot of insulin and other hormones into your bloodstream, and in general distress the body so much that it can secrete a little extra oil on the skin.

It couldn't have been easy for them to revisit accepted wisdom into acne causes from a long time ago. Doing that just changes everything. But they tested this theory on a few dozen male subjects, all of them with quite a case of acne. For three months, they gave a few lucky participants a normal unhealthy diet with white bread, lots of sugar-loaded cereals, and pasta, and to the others, they gave a much healthier (and consequently less desirable) low glycemic diet of whole grain bread, lean meats, fruit, and high protein, low sugar shakes. And they discovered that the acne skin lesions visibly went away in the ones with the healthier low glycemic diet, but the control group that was given the high glycemic food saw no difference in their acne problems. They also found that the people on the healthy diet had lower levels of male hormones circulating through their system. Free unattached male hormones are always known to feature among the leading acne causes.

Would you like then to give up sugary sodas and cereals for clearer pain-free skin? Who knows, you could react just like one of those test subjects they had. But it depends, of course. It depends on whether you're male. Well, here is another piece of insight they've come up with in their search for acne causes. Certainly, having a great breakout all over your face can be really stressful. But what if the stress itself were to come back and reinforce the acne that caused it in the first place?

Now, why would this be? Well, there's been a study that not only makes the relationship between stress and acne look possible, they even have a way of explaining it. Basically, they took up about 100 high school students with moderate levels of acne, for a few months. They saw that any pop quizzes right away sent their anxiety levels shooting, and the anxiety inflamed cells in their body just a little bit and caused a real breakout of acne. If you think about it, you wouldn't really need it perfectly well proven how much stress or a sugary diet contribute to acne, would you? These factors seem to basically affect everything about our health. Until they use this information to invent a drug for acne, perhaps we could all just keep away from all that is basically a regular modern lifestyle.

Acne Pimples

If Mere Bacteria are Responsible for Acne Pimples, How Hard can they be to Get Rid of? It's a wonder, looking at all the hundreds of kinds of bacteria that call your skin home, that the researchers have found the very one to implicate in acne pimples, the scourge of teen life. Find it they did, a tough customer called the Propionibacterium acnes. You will find these bacteria everywhere on your skin; they make their home in the little pores and hair follicles of your skin, and have forever caused acne in young adults everywhere. Scientists never lose their interest in understanding acne pimples. To have an effective and safe cure for this affliction guarantees the inventor fame and fortune. They just finished studying the P.Acnes bacterium's DNA; that is how serious they are, trying to find a way to defeat it. And the research does bring us results. They found that these bacteria mostly like it in the pores and hair follicles around the upper part of the body: the upper back and chest, and the face. All the oil that the pores and follicles produce, the bacterium thrives on, and consumes. In many ways, P.Acnes is quite a defender of healthy skin. It's genes allow it to launch terrible poisons on skin fungi and other bacteria that mean to do us harm. Scientists have never seen anything like the common bacterium that causes acne pimples. Some of its genes no one has ever seen on any other living organism before. But that doesn't make it the good guy. Everyone has heard of the fearsome flesh eating bacteria, the streptococci. The bacteria that cause acne pimples, produce the same kind of flesh-dissolving enzyme the streptococci do, to destroy and eat our skin with. The only mercy granted here is that they don't do much of this. And its a genetic makeup allows it to quickly change form to evade attack by the body's immune system. But, perhaps, the role that P.Acnes plays in breakouts of acne pimples is a minor one. Modern treatment methods today are basically directed at killing the bacteria, and preventing tiny skin pieces from clogging up the pores and trapping dirt and oil inside. Antibiotics don't really work well with this bacterium, because it has developed resistance to most varieties. In fact, some of the more stubborn cases of acne pimples seem to yield to nothing weaker than cancer medicines. Researchers are now trying to determine an easy way to defeat acne pimples. Vitamin A is supposed to make us shed skin so that nothing ends up clogging pores. All this research, and what we have to show for it is Vitamin A. Sometimes, it takes a lot of work to see what is right before you.

10 Easy SEO Tips for Blogspot Bloggers

This article discusses 10 easy ways Blogger (Blogspot) Bloggers can build site traffic and in many cases improve SEO - search engine optimization. By implementing these steps you will improve the likelihood of your site ranking more highly in search engine results of major search engine players Google, Yahoo and MSN and as a result increase the number of visitors accessing your site. 10 Easy SEO Tips for Blogspot Bloggers to Improve Search Engine Rankings 1. Make Your Title Tags Search Engine Friendly One of the most important tweaks necessary for Blogspot Blogs is the adjustment of the title tags of your website because Blogger.com by default has not optimized these for search engines. To prove this point navigate to an individual post on your blog and you will see that the blogname appears first in the title bar at the top of your browser followed by the post name. As search engines place greater value on the first words of an entry this puts your site at a disadvantage in search engine results. Fortunately it is easy to reverse the blog name and the post name with a simple tweak. For instructions on how to change the order of these title tags please refer to my article entitled Adjust Blogger Title Tags to Improve SEO 2. Create Search Engine Friendly Permalinks Blogger automatically generates a permalink based on the title of your post each time you make a post. For this reason it is important to craft your title carefully. Permalinks are sometimes less than ideal especially if you have a long title. Take for example the following permalink for one of my posts: http://blogknowhow.blogspot.com/2009/02/improved-permalinks-for-blogger-posts.html You will see that it is search engine friendly in that in contains 2 keywords blogger and permalinks. However you may be surprised to know that How to Create Search Engine Friendly Permalinks for Blogger Posts is actually the title of this post not Improved Permalinks for Blogger Posts. I have initially used a title that is keyword rich and then after publishing gone back and entered a more descriptive title. No matter how many times I change the title the original permalink remains. If I had entered the second title straight away I may have ended up with the following permalink: http://blogknowhow.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-create-search-engine-friendly.html Not very pretty is it? And as you can see the whole point of the post is lost. For more information on crafting permalinks please refer to my article How to Create Search Engine Friendly Permalinks for Blogger Posts 3. Add a Social Networking Button to Your Blog By adding a Social Bookmarking button to your website you will enable visitors to your blog to create links to popular social bookmarking sites such as Google, Technorati, Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Stumble Upon, Reddit, Delicious, Furl, Yahoo etc. This means that visitors to your site will be able share these links with others thereby helping you attract more traffic to your site and encourage return visits. Another benefit of a social bookmarking button is that you will be able to identify visitor trends and social bookmarking behaviour on your site. For more information on how to add a free Add This Social Bookmarking button to your Blogger blog please refer to my article Add a Social Bookmarking Button to Your Blog. 4. Submit a Sitemap of Your Blog to Popular Search Engines If attracting traffic to your site is important to you then it is imperative that you ensure that your Blogger (Blogspot) blog is properly indexed by popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. One way to expedite this is to submit a sitemap to each of three major search engines. Please refer to my tutorials on website submission, authenticating your site and adding your site feed to Yahoo Site Explorer, Google Webmaster Tools and MSN Tools. Google - Submit Your Blogspot Blog Sitemap to Google Yahoo - Submit Your Blogspot Blog to Yahoo MSN - Submit Blogger Sitemap to MSN Live Search Also take a look at my tutorial on submitting your blog to major search engines 5. Build Quality Links If you want to rank highly in Google and other search engines then you need to generate quality in-bound links. That doesn't mean exchanging links with everything and everyone as I see some new webmasters do. A few quality links from authoritative sites will boost your page rankings quickly and are far superior to a bunch of links from low ranking sites. There are several good ways to generate links to your blog. One easy way is to to submit your site to blog directories. For more information on recommended blog directories please see my article Submit Your Blogger Blog to Blog Directories. Another way to cultivate in-bound links is to submit your best articles to article directories. A third possibility is to actively participate in forums and on other related blogs where commenting affords you the option of adding a link to your site. I would recommend linking to DMOZ (Open Directory Project). Care needs to be taken to submit your site to the correct subject area. Becoming listed can take awhile so patience is needed. 6. Write Quality Content and Post Frequently If you have read any articles on the subject of Blogging and SEO you will no doubt have observed writers emphasising the importance of quality content. I can't stress enough how much return visits depend on providing inducements to visitors to come back. If your site content is well written and informative half the battle is won. Make sure you post frequently so that visitors can see the value of subscribing in a reader. Take some care with the presentation of your content and images as this will present a professional image. Avoid common pitfalls like bad grammar and spelling mistakes which stand out like a sore toe and detract from a visitor's overall positive experience of your site. One leading professional blogger Yaro Starak recommends the use of pillar articles. These are articles that don't change over time and continue to attract visitors. The best pillar articles explain some concept, provide definitions, give advice or present some argument. Your site needs to have at least 5 pillar articles and more if you can manage it. Pillar articles need to be more than 500 words long, crafted to generate interest and provide a welcome resource to your visitors. 7. Ensure Your Content is Keyword Rich Apart from the quality of your content there is the question of keyword density. The more keyword rich your posts are the greater the likelihood they will appear higher in search engine results. This means it is worth the effort of crafting your content in such a way that you make use of important keywords and keyword phrases frequently used. Don't go overboard however as Google is smart enough to recognise if your pages are littered with keywords and nothing much else. A useful free SEO tool to help you optimise your site using keywords and labels is Google Adwords. Another good tool to help you quickly craft keyword rich material is Live Keyword Analysis which assesses the keyword density of keywords and keyword phrases of any post you paste into the analysis box. When writing posts make sure your opening sentence describes what the article is about and contains your keywords and keyword phrases. It is important that your first sentence is keyword rich as search engines like Google give more emphasis to content at the beginning of the post. Also it is worth including a short ending statement about the content of the post as there is some evidence that Google also places value on the content at the end of the post. 8. Manage Your Feeds Carefully Feeds help your visitors find your site so they need to be managed carefully in order to make the most of them. Your site feeds are an important way to create backlinks too. Backlinks from authoritative sites are highly valuable and can boost your page ranking. For information about showing backlinks please refer to the Blogger Help Article About Backlinks Ensure you have your RSS feed icons clearly visible for visitors to see. The most superior positioning of the feed icons on your site is in the header. Watch out for coming tutorials on how to improve positioning of RSS feed links. You can redirect your feed to a feedburning service like Feedburner and then add a chicklet to your site (orange RSS feed button) so that the feed is instantly available on click. Please refer to my tutorials about Blogger feeds:Burn a Blogger RSS Feed at Feedburner and Blogger RSS Feeds and Feedburner. To add a FeedFlare to your burned feed check out my tutorial. If you haven't burnt your feed you can try adding a Subscription Links widget to a sidebar too to encourage visitors to subscribe to your site in popular on-line readers such as Google Reader. You will find the Subscription Links widget available under the list of gadgets. Display your most recent posts by configuring a feed widget. Under Layout > Page Elements add a feed gadget to a sidebar. Enter the URL of the default feed of your site which will be: http://yoursitename.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default Enter Recent Posts in the title and then Save. For more information about adding a posts feed widget to a sidebar please refer to my article Add a Recent Posts Feed to a Blogger Blog You can do the same for comments if you wish to have a list of recent comments displayed in your sidebar. In this case you would enter: http://yoursitename.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default For more in depth coverage about adding a comments feed to your sidebar please see my article Add a Recent Comments Feed to a Blogger Sidebar Ensure you set up your site feeds to show the full text. To check this navigate to Settings > Site Feeds and select yes from the dropdown box for all three feeds. Consider having a feed specifically for a popular label if it contains 20 or more posts. 9. Optimize Your Use of Images Chances are you don't give a thought to images when you insert them into your posts but images can be optimized by careful use of filenames and the alt attribute. When naming images avoid long names. Instead give your images distinctive filenames rather than something generic like 00045.jpg which has no meaning. The alt attribute allows you to specify what text is displayed when a visitor's mouse hovers over an image. The alt attribute also gets displayed if the image is not available for some reason. By optimizing your alt attributes you are increasing the likelihood of your images appearing in Google Image Searches. Optimizing your alt attributes is easy. Every time you insert an image into a post look for the alt attribute which will be empty by default style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 122px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/abcdeefgBxA/4560/sidebar-add-this-bookmark-button.JPG" border="0" /> Fill in the alt attribute with a useful description of your image style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 122px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="Blog Know How Sidebar Showing Add This Bookmark Button" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/abcdeefgBxA/4560/sidebar-add-this-bookmark-button.JPG" border="0" /> Depending on the subject of your site you can gain a lot of traffic from the images you post on your site. The more unique the content of your site the greater the likelihood that your traffic will stem from images. Without going overboard ensure you have a good mix of images to support your articles. 10. Take Advantage of Web Analytics Services Having implemented some strategies to improve crawling and indexing of your site by search engine giants Google, Yahoo and MSN chances are you will want to see how these changes have impacted on the traffic reaching your site. Web Analytics programs are a valuable tool for gaining insight into visitor behaviour and trends. The kind of information that a program like Google Analytics will provide is: how users reach and behave on your site the most popular content on your site the impact of optimizations you make to your site (e.g. by how much did changing the order of title tags improve traffic from search engines?) To integrate Google Analytics into your Blogger (Blogspot) blog please refer to my articles Track Visitors to Your Blogger Blog and Add Google Analytics to Blogger Blog This article has discussed 10 easy ways to build site traffic and improve SEO for Blogger (Blogspot) Bloggers by addressing the following areas: feeds, images, social bookmarking, title tags, permalinks, content, analytics, submitting your blog to search engines. source http://blogknowhow.blogspot.com/2009/03/10-tips-to-build-traffic-for-blogspot.html

Domestic violence and abuse against women

Domestic violence and abuse against women are, sadly, cross-cultural traditions dating back to the dawn of time. Women are often colloquially termed "the weaker sex," and for many men, the relative physical helplessness of women presents an opportunity or target, sick as it is, for abuse against women.

It's important to note that it doesn't really matter what race, culture or creed you are. Abuse against women is a time-honored tradition all over the world, from Topeka to Tehran and all points in between. While in certain cases, such as the muslim world, abuse against women is far more tolerated and encouraged, that doesn't mean that abuse against women doesn't happen in the western world. It surely does, and it is surely just as insidious.

Abuse against women can take many different forms. Physical violence is the most overt, but mental and emotional abuse against women are also common. And remember this: whether it comes from a loved one or a family member or a complete stranger, violence against women is a crime punishable by jailtime. It doesn't matter if it's your spouse or your boyfriend (or girlfriend), it doesn't matter if they say they didn't mean it, it doesn't matter if you think they really love you. The facts are that those who commit abuse against women once are more likely than not to do so again.

And if you are a victim of said abuse, you have to remember that it's not your fault. You do not deserve to be hit, or screamed at or intimidated, or even called names or told that you are worthless. If you're in a situation where something like that is happening, it's imperative that you seek help from trusted friends and family in order to get help and get away from your abuser.

You must also talk with your doctor or health care adviser, especially if the abuse has been physical. And most especially if the physical abuse has been of a sexual nature. Do not delay, do not make excuses and do not take the blame on yourself. You are the victim here, and it's incumbent upon you to stand up for your rights and protect yourself.

Also, please pay special attention to this if you are in an abusive relationship: BE CAREFUL OF USING THE INTERNET. Your movements can be logged and tracked if you search online, and if your abusive partner is controling and violent, he or she could become enraged at your decision to seek help. So take all the necessary precautions - delete your page history and cookies or, if your partner is very savvy, you may want to use a friend's computer or a public computer at, say, the local library.

The importance of quality blog design

Many individuals and companies are now diving into the world of social media and social networking. For many, this means creating and running a blog that is updated frequently. These blogs also usually include rich, high quality content. A combination of the company's reputation and the content posted to the blog, as well as the feedback and social opportunities provided, will drive customers and clients to a site. But this is not always the case. One of the major factors in keeping a visitor on your site is blog design.

We've all had the misfortune of visiting websites that have been difficult to navigate. You might also have seen sites that are cramped with too much material, or that use blog design elements that are quite frankly painful to behold. It's not much fun to have to put on a pair of sunglasses to be able to blink your way through a website replete with flashing images and clashing color combinations.

One major blog design factor you should keep in mind when putting together or upgrading your company or personal blog design is navigation. The main content, which usually comprises the newest posts, and basic information about your company, are essential elements to your blog website. Ensure that they are visible from the main page, and make sure it does not require the viewer to navigate to get to it. Each extra click that your readers have to make only serves to push them away from your website. Once you've ensured that your main content is easy to find, take a moment to consider the placement of your links, contact details, and any links to related sites or archived material. These should be easily accessed using either links on a sidebar or at the top of your site. If your blog is content heavy, it might also be a good idea to provide a list of 'tags' or 'categories' in a side column. This way they can be easily accessed by readers.

Another thing you should keep in mind when considering your blog design is the actual aesthetic design itself. While it's tempting to go for lush fonts and bold colors, bear in mind that there are only a select few fonts that are able to be universally read by every type of browser or computer. You also have your customers' eyes to think of. While a swirly pink font may look great, it may pose difficulties when your viewers actually try to read it. Try to stick with simple, familiar fonts, and where possible, use black text on a pale background rather than pale text on a dark background. Also ensure that there is enough contrast between your text and the background color, as this will enhance readability.

Blog design is an essential element of putting together a vibrant, useful website that your customers and clients will want to return to. By keeping things clear and simple, and focusing on accessibility when designing your blog, you'll stand above the competition.

Air Conditioner

The air conditioner was invented in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier, one year after earning a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.  He first patented it in 1906 as ‘The apparatus for cooling air’ (U.S. Pat# 808897). The air conditioner was initially used in department stores, factories, movie theatres and industries. It was only to be introduced to American homes after World War II.

At present, most if not all American homes do have an air conditioner. Office buildings also have several air conditioners installed. It is interesting to note that any new home under construction in America is fitted with an air conditioner. That is how popular the air conditioner also known as AC is, among American homes.

There are different types of air conditioners in the market today, varying from price to functionality. There are, however, four standard units from which modified versions emerge. Most popular is the Central air conditioner. About 70% of all air conditioners currently in use belong to this category. The central air conditioner consists of an outdoor section known as a condenser, and an indoor section, connected together by a copper pipe.

There is the Ductless air conditioner. This also has an indoor and outdoor section, but lack the duct systems. They are used to cool rooms and can have several indoor sections in different rooms connected to a single outdoor condenser.

Another type of air conditioner is the Portable air conditioner. It is very similar to the central air conditioner the only difference being in size. The portable AC is smaller and much lighter making it movable and very popular in providing instant cooling to rooms.

The other type of air conditioner is the Window air conditioner. Although very similar to the portable AC both in design and function, the difference between them is, the components of a window AC are housed inside a cabinet making them less movable.

Installing any type of air conditioner in your house has its benefits. For starters, the AC keeps a stable room temperature, this regardless of the conditions outside. Most of them come with IR remotes and are capable of changing the temperature in minutes. Air conditioners remove moisture from the air as it is cooled. During summer, humidity levels can be very high and an air conditioner can reduce these levels to suit your desired conditions.

A few disadvantages of air conditioners include, the costs of running them, they need some attention and cleaning, they work best indoors with both doors and windows closed. Some air conditioners are noisy.

All in all, air conditioners are a must have in every American household and its best to have yours before this coming summer.

SMART FILIPINO BOY
A Filipino boy was very sad in class.
The teacher asked, “KULITS what is your problem?”
KULITS answered, “I’m too smart for the first-grade. My sister is in the third-grade and I’m smarter than she is!
I think I should be in the third-grade too!”
Teacher had enough. She took KULITS to the principal’s office.
While KULITS waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told the teacher he would give the boy a test and if he failed to answer any of his
questions he was to go back to the first-grade and behave.
She agreed.
KULITS was brought in and the conditions were explained
to him and he agreed to take the test.
Principal: What is 3 x 3?
KULITS: 9, maam!
Principal: What is 6 x 6?
KULITS: 36, maam!
And so it went with every question the principal
thought a third-grade should know.
The principal looks at teacher and tells her,
“I think KULITS can go to the third-grade. ”
Teacher says to the principal, “I have some of my
own questions. Can I ask him ?”
The principal and KULITS both agreed.
Teacher asks: What does a cow have four of that I
have only two of?
KULITS: Legs, maam!
Teacher : What is in your pants that you have but I
do not have?
KULITS: Pockets!
Teacher: What starts with a C and ends with a T, is
hairy, oval, delicious and contains thin whitish liquid?
KULITS: Coconut!
Teacher: What goes in hard and pink then comes out
soft And sticky?
(The principal’s eyes open really wide and before he
could stop the answer, KULITS. was taking charge…)
KULITS: Bubblegum, maam!
Teacher: What does a man do standing up, a woman
does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?
(The principal’s eyes open really wide and before he
could stop the answer…)
KULITS: Shake hands!
Teacher: Now I will ask some “Who am I” sort of
questions, okay?
KULITS: Yep!
Teacher: You stick your poles inside me. You tie me
down to get me up. I get wet before you do.
KULITS: Tent
Teacher: A finger goes in me. You fiddle with me
when you’re bored. The
best man always has me first.
KULITS: Wedding Ring, maam!
Teacher: I come in many sizes. When I’m not well, I
drip. When you blow me, you feel good.
KULITS: Nose!
Teacher: I have a stiff shaft. My tip penetrates. I
come with a quiver. What is it?
KULITS: Arrow!
Teacher: What word starts with a ‘F’ and ends in ‘K’
that means lot of heat and excitement?
KULITS: Firetruck!
Teacher: What word starts with a ‘F’ and ends in ‘K’
& if u don’t get it, u have to use ur hand.
KULITS: Fork!
Teacher: What is it that all men have one. It’s
longer on some men, than on others,
the pope doesn’t use his and a man gives it to his
wife after they’re married?
KULITS: SURNAME!
Teacher: What part of the man has no bone but has
muscles, has lots of veins, like pumping, & is responsible
for making love ?
KULITS: HEART, maam!
The principal breathed a sigh of relief and said to
the teacher :
Principal: Huh! send this Boy to Harvard University!!! Even I got
the last ten questions wrong myself! :D

19 hidden Windows XP Secrets

Uncover some of Windows XP’s secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ’schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options — they’re all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number. Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’. 9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing font display technology — but doesn’

t have it enabled by default. It’s well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who’s using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to http://www.whatismyip.com — and get them to make sure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run… from the start menu and type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options… and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the Related Posts

Top Ten List of Superheroes

Top Ten List of Superheroes

Everyone has their own favorite superheroes and usually their own favorite comic book publisher. The top two comic book publishers in the world in number of annual sales are DC and Marvel, not necessarily in that order. Superman, one of the top two on anyone’s top list of superheroes is on the DC roster, Spiderman is on Marvel’s. Growing up, we always thought of Marvel as the coolest, hippest and best, but at that time Marvel was not the best-selling publisher. Below is my Top Ten List of Superheroes. See if your favorite made the grade.

Number Ten: Prime. When Prime number one came out in the early 1990s it had a good twist of a premise. Prime was just an eleven year old suburban boy that transformed into the seven foot tall, massively muscled Prime.

Number Nine: The Silver Surfer. The Silver Surfer is a Marvel hero that came from the Fantastic Four magazines of the late 60s. The Silver Surfer eventually got his own title and joins the Top Ten list of superheroes. He is the cosmos surfing, brooding mystery man that used to work for that big baddie, the colossal Galactus, eater of worlds.

Number Eight: Captain America. This G.I. turned into a science experiment by the army is another classic character that was created during World War II as a way to entertain and inspire the troops. With his trusted sidekick Bucky Barnes, Captain America fought for truth and freedom. He later joined the Avengers in the 60s after being thawed out of a glacier in perfect physical condition.

Number Seven: Green Lantern or Green Arrow. Take your pick, they are both great characters who happen to love the color green. Go figure.

Number Six: The Incredible Hulk. Though he could be a super villain at times, this green behemoth makes the list of superheroes because he was also temporarily a part of the Avengers, a group of superheroes, until they realized that he had a bipolar personality and in the interest of not getting killed themselves they kicked him out.

Number Five: The Fantastic Four. Yes, all four of them belong on my list of superheroes because this comic rocks! Marvel artist Jack Kirby created them along with genius Stan Lee back in the sixties and they are more popular today than ever due to the recent Hollywood movies. Flame on!

Number Four: The X-Men. Again, Marvel shoots and scores with their brilliant lineup of angry mutants led by Professor X. Wolverine is one of the greatest superheroes of all time and he joins a team led by Cyclops, Storm, the Beast, Dr. Jean Grey (Dark Phoenix) and Iceman.

Number Three: Batman (and Robin). DC created this Gotham City defender and his spunky sidekick way back in the forties and he is still going strong after all the great movies including “The Dark Knight” which won an Academy Award for the late, great Heath Ledger. Although they do not technically have “super” powers, they make the list of superheroes in a big way.

Number Two: Superman. Not much to say here. Everyone knows the S-man. Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s….well, you know who.

Number One: Spiderman. This is of course a personal favorite because I grew up with him, though my kids prefer Smallville and Superman. Spidey’s alter ego Peter Parker was like every other nerdy boy growing up. Bullies pushed him around at school and he could never get the girl. One day he is bitten by a radioactive spider and gains the agility, web-making, and strength of a spider. Well, a very large spider anyhow.

If you need more units, but the population limit stops you, try this. Bring your population to 1 unit beneath the population limit. Now, make sure you have lots of resources, enough to build several units.
Next, go to all the buildings that can produce units, and QUICKLY click on the icon that makes the unit. Do this on every building as fast as you can, but you can only continue until a unit is completed, thus bringing your population to it's limit. HOWEVER, the game will complete all the units you started! With this, going fast enough, you, will be able to exceed your limit by about 10 units.
